End of Event
Creator names are revealing at the main 2024 collection and the 2024 Madness collection. The New Year's Resolutions 2025 collection is open for posting. The structured parts of this year's event are over - but you can keep posting recs and commenting on works to let their creators know you enjoyed them.

Please comment!

Please check that you have commented on any gifts you received - you can search on your username at the Yuletide 2024 collection, or the Yuletide Madness 2024 collection, or check your own personal gifts page. We understand not everyone can comment immediately due to late-December commitments or unforeseen events, but please comment when you can to acknowledge the gifts you requested. Comments and kudos on other Yuletide works are also very welcome.

Thank you from mods and team
Thank you to everyone who took part in Yuletide 2024: writers, requesters, betas, pinch hitters, community coordinators, chatters, hippos and especially the hippo pool.

Thank you from mods to the tagmod team: these are the assistants who research and process tags, proofread announcements, brainstorm author questions, contribute specific fandom knowledge, check stories, and discuss how to solve problems.

We look forward to running Yuletide again in 2025!

And now
There's a reveals post up at the participant community, if you want to chat about your writing process now that you can.

New stories can be posted to the New Year's Resolutions 2025 collection. (Note: the rules for this collection have been updated to clarify the point that stories created with generative/AI tools are not appropriate for any Yuletide collection - please only submit works of your own creation.)

Feedback
As always, general feedback is welcome!

This year, we changed our pinch hit system: instead of sending individual pinch hits through email to Google Groups, we posted pinch hit summaries at [community profile] yuletide_pinch_hits and posted alerts through email and Discord. How did that work for you?

Again, feedback on other topics is also welcome.

Thank you for helping to make Yuletide 2024 joyful for many fans.

At push of button, this year's Madness collection has 350 works in 260+ fandoms. That's more than last year's works (311)!

Madness collection

Main collection

AO3 wranglers have processed a lot of new fandoms; in the main collection, the 1057 that appeared on the fandoms page at reveals have become 1151! Thanks to everyone who has helped make wranglers' jobs easier by using canonical tags, tags from the tag set, or other recommended tags, as appropriate in each case.

If you've written in a new fandom that isn't wrangled yet, we encourage you to use Unspecified Fandom as a tag to help people find your work; many works originally tagged this way now have wrangled fandoms, in which case, you can take the tag off if you wish.

As in the last post:
Commenting
Please comment on your gift(s) to let your writer know you appreciate them. Please also comment on anything else you enjoy!

Recs
Making work recommendations is a tradition. Please see more information at the participant community about where you can post your recs.

Problems
If there is something wrong with your gift or you have another concern, please contact the mods at yuletideadmin@gmail.com.

Anonymity
Yuletide is an anonymous exchange until January 1. Please don't give away what you've written. When logged in, you can, if you want, reply to comments on your own works, and you will show up as Anonymous Creator until the authors of the collection are revealed.

The Yuletide event concludes at 9am UTC, 1 January 2025. At that time we will reveal creator names at both the main and Madness collection, and also open the new New Year's Resolution collection.

The works of the 2024 Yuletide Collection are available to enjoy. Allow us to present you with 1757 stories in ~1057 fandoms! [fandom number will go up as fandoms are wrangled]

The reveals process takes a little while to work in a collection of this size; if a story in the collection is still a mystery work an hour after opening, please let us know.

Finding works
You can find your own gifts on your AO3 gifts page: https://archiveofourown.org/users/YOUR-NAME-HERE/gifts, or by searching the box at the top of the collection works page for the full name you signed up with, or by checking your email if you get email notifications from AO3. Note: your email notifications may bundle together, and it might look like you only got one gift, when in fact you got more.

You can browse the collection by tags or by fandoms. Some fandoms are new and may not show up immediately (wranglers are working on this) or where you expect them; please check labels such as Original Work, 19th Century Historical RPF, Object and Concept Anthropomorphism, and Unspecified Fandom. More info about Unspecified Fandom here.

Anonymity
Yuletide is an anonymous exchange until creator reveals January 1. Please don't give away what you've written. When logged in, you can, if you want, reply to comments on your own works, and you will show up as Anonymous Creator until the authors of the collection are revealed.

Commenting
Comment on your gift(s) to let your writer(s) know you appreciate them, please. We also recommend commenting far and wide to spread the comment joy around!

AO3 changed default comment settings this year. If you want to make sure people can comment on your gifts when they aren't logged in, you may need to change a setting on your work. More information here, under 'Your comment settings'.

Want some extra motivation to browse the collection? Check out the Yuletide Reading Bingo challenge!

Recs
Making work recommendations is a tradition. Please see more information at the participant community about where you can post your recs.

Madness
For those still writing, the 2024 Yuletide Madness collection will stay open for new stories to be posted for 24 hours. It will close for posting, and open for reading, at 9am UTC 26 December. If you're looking for prompts, there's a roundup of links here.

Problems
If there is something wrong with your gift or you have another concern, please contact the mods at yuletideadmin@gmail.com.

Again: enjoy!!

All assignments are in and the main collection is on track to open at 9am UTC 25th December!

As of this post, we have:
1675 works in the main collection
170 works in the madness collection

COUNTDOWN

This means: IT'S TREATING TIME! In particular, there are many pinch hitters who did not sign up but who have taken on assignments. Their prompts are here. Let's get them gifts!

Here are links to all prompts in all formats, and instructions on how to post treats, if you need them!

Tagging

Because Yuletide is all about rare fandoms, your fandom may not yet exist as a canonical on the archive. (If you click on your tag, and you get the message “This tag has not been marked common and can't be filtered on (yet)”, it is not canonical.) If this is the case for a work you’ve posted:

  • If your fandom is in the tagset as a subset of a canonical fandom, because otherwise it’s considered too broad for eligibility, please tag with the canonical fandom rather than the tagset fandom. This includes RPF fandoms, as well as comics, TV, movie, book, game series, and any other canon where individual installments have been nominated separately.

  • Similarly, if your characters have canonical tags, but have been disambiguated for the tagset, please use the existing canonical tags for your characters, rather than the tagset tags.

  • If your fandom is in the tagset as a collection of works by a single artist, please tag with the individual work or works (as separate tags) that inspired your story.

  • Please avoid tagging with fandom names that include the phrases “All Media Types”, “& Related Fandoms”, and “Works”.

  • If your new fandom doesn’t fall under any of these cases, please use the tagset tag.

Following these guidelines will help the AO3 fandom wranglers canonise your fandom as quickly as possible, so that it will show up in the fandoms list.

If your fandom is new and has not been canonised, then to ensure your work is seen in the (short) gap between the collection going live & the wranglers tackling all the new fandoms, we encourage you to tag your work with "Unspecified Fandom" as well as with the actual fandom. (You're encouraged to remove the “Unspecified Fandom” tag when your fandom does show up!)

If your work includes worldbuilding, you may (but are not required to) tag with the canonical “Worldbuilding” freeform. Please do not tag with “Worldbuilding ([Fandom Name])”.

Check Everything

  • Spell-check your title, and your summary if you have a summary!

  • Make sure you uploaded the right draft!

And for bonus points
  • Check your recipient's DNWs one more time!

  • Check the email associated with your AO3 account to see if the mods have been trying to contact you!

  • Check the beta want-ads on Discord to see if there's anything you can help with!

Miscellaneous Reminders

  • If you're unlikely to be able to comment until the end of the anon period or later, consider letting your author know at the AFK post.

  • You can find beta volunteers at this post or at the Discord server. If you have free time, please consider looking out for beta requests on Discord! Check out the hippo-want-ads channel.

  • Write that last Madness treat!

  • Get ready to rec things at [community profile] yuletide!

Yuletide works are scheduled to go live two days from now, at 9am UTC 25 December (if all goes well and there are no further pinch hits needed).

COUNTDOWN TO REVEALS

Treats

Treats in both the Madness and Main Yuletide collections are extremely welcome. You can post a treat for someone in the main collection up until 9am UTC 25 December, and in the Madness collection up until 9am UTC 26 December. There's more information about posting treats here, and especially, please consider treats for pinch hitters.

Please check your work

  • Please check that it is actually the right draft. Mistakes can happen to anyone, but checking that everything looks right is a crucial part of posting. Make sure your work has a title and that the summary doesn't say "tbd". Please check that all the text is there and you didn't post the version with [name?] and [thing goes here] notes. Any uploaded version must be a complete story that is readable as it is, even if you're still making edits between now and reveals. Please don't risk disappointing your recipient or requiring mods to seek a back-up pinch hit.

  • Please check that all required characters feature in the work. This is likely to mean all the characters your recipient tagged, not just the ones they wrote prompts for. Or, if they selected Any, a character from the tag set. They may have selected additional tags that give further guidance about which characters to include - please check that too. If your recipient selected Worldbuilding and you're not sure there's enough of it, get a second opinion - a friend, a beta. If there is any doubt about whether your story contains all the characters it needs to contain, please check with mods. Prompts alone are not automatically permission to leave characters out. The use of additional tags may still leave some grey areas.

  • Please review your author's notes. Yuletide stories are anonymous for one week - do not give your name or link to your personal sites or socials in your author's note. Do not promise expanded, future, or replacement gifts - your work needs to stand alone. And do not apologise for your work in your author's note, or talk about what a struggle it was to write. People often feel doubt as well as excitement when giving someone a story, but don't give your recipient your doubts as part of their gift. In your author's note, please follow the principle that if you cannot say something positive, don't say anything at all.

  • Please check your recipient's Do-Not-Wants. Yes, again.

  • Please check your story in general! You don't have to get it beta read, but please check spelling and grammar.

We're almost at reveals! Are we ready? Let's make it so.

Miscellaneous

  • If you're unlikely to be able to comment until the end of the anon period or later, consider letting your author know at the AFK post.

  • You can find beta volunteers at this post or at the Discord server. If you have free time, please consider looking out for beta requests on Discord! Check out the hippo-want-ads channel.

  • Get ready to rec things at [community profile] yuletide!

Yuletide 2024 is on track for reveals in under 4 days - that is, if all pinch hits are claimed and filled.

Tips

Please check the following things over in your work.

Formatting

Now you've uploaded your story (hooray!), please check it for unexpected formatting issues on AO3. Please especially check bits you're going to replace like [xxx]. But also please check for legibility - check for text with no gaps between paragraphs or text with massive gaps between paragraphs. Click/tap for info...
Issues often arise when posting from Google Docs. You can use this Google doc or this extension to help convert your document to HTML for a better copy/paste experience. The problem with italics and punctuation can also be solved by including the punctuation inside the italics tags.

If your story has no space between paragraphs, check to see if you pasted your story into the HTML tab instead of the Rich Text tab. Paragraph spacing occasionally gets added to places like summaries when you edit them, so you might want to double-check that also!

Below the cut are examples of spacing that’s too big, too little, and juuuuust right. )

If the spacing in your work is wacky, we recommend editing it to avoid putting off potential readers.

Your comment settings

AO3 recently changed the default settings for comments on your work. If you want to allow comments from guests, check your work. Click/tap for info...
Before July 2024, the default setting for comments allowed on your work was "Registered users and guests can comment." In July, AO3 changed that so that the default setting is "Only registered users can comment." That means that if you posted your Yuletide work without changing the settings, no one can comment on your work without logging into their account.

If that matches your preferences, that's great. If you'd like to make it possible for anyone who reads your work to comment, please edit your work and change the setting. This setting is directly above the Work Text field.

Tagging and "Unspecified Fandom"

Please tag accurately, including warnings. You can use Unspecified Fandom to help users find a fandom that isn't wrangled yet, and please reach out if you're not sure how to tag a new or non-canonical fandom. Click/tap for info...
For warnings, Choose Not to Warn is a valid warning tag. You may wish to use the end notes if there is content that you don't want to spoil with specific tags.

If your fandom is completely new, please use the tag that was approved into the tag set. These tags were formulated to meet archive guidelines and will be more quickly canonized, so that your work can be found from the Fandoms page of the collection. We recommend you also use "Unspecified Fandom", because this will show up in the fandoms list immediately, even if the actual fandom tag isn't wrangled straight away. Please do not tag your work with Unspecified Fandom as the only fandom tag. Instead, tag with both Unspecified Fandom and the actual fandom tag.

If your fandom is a subset of a canonical tag (like an RPF fandom that belongs in Actor RPF, or a season of a Let's Play fandom that has an overarching canonical), we recommend tagging with the parent fandom. Please reach out to mods if you're not sure that's what you should do.

Your author's notes

Please keep these positive. Please don't identify yourself - no social media links! Also, please don't apologize for your work, tell your recipient all about what a tough time you had writing, or otherwise ask your recipient to accept a negative sentiment along with their gift.

Treats!!

Additional works are warmly welcomed for participants signed up to Yuletide* and all additional pinch hitters.

Please check these guidelines for whether to post treats in the main Yuletide collection (closes Dec 25) or the Yuletide Madness collection (closes Dec 26). Unlike in some exchanges, Yuletide's treating period does not continue indefinitely. Please get your treats in before reveals - or you'll need to wait until next year.

Not all users accept treatsPlease do not create treats for: Aleesha_Amber, Arsenic, baptisia, crabwize, theblakery. This list is subject to change, as you can change the setting to accept treats (or not) at any time. Check with mods if unsure.

The deadline has passed, and the main collection is temporarily closed. ETA - open again!

To all who got your work in: congratulations! Take a well-earned break, and then please check wordcount, formatting, html; check that you've uploaded the correct version, and that all your text is actually there. You can get to what you've submitted from your Statistics page, or from your Works in Collections. Your story should be marked as "complete" rather than one or more of multiple chapters yet to come.

To all who didn't make it this year: it happens, and we hope you enjoy the collection reveals.

To all who are still working on beta jobs, treats, or pinch hits: thank you and good luck!

Pinch hits coming!!
Post-deadline pinch hits will be available soon at [community profile] yuletide_pinch_hits. This next round will be due at 9 PM UTC, 22 December.

Beta requests
We have outstanding beta requests on the Yuletide Discord (please see the #hippo-want-ads channel), and more betas are always welcome at the Dreamwidth beta post.

There is also an Away from Keyboard post up on the participant community, for you to (optionally) let your author know if it'll be a while before you can read your gift.

Happy polishing! Please keep an eye out for pinch hits. Please also keep an eye on this community and the email associated with your AO3 account - as we check works, we may have other announcements or need to contact you.

The assignments that you received when signing up, and pinch hits #1-110, are due at 9am UTC 18 December (see countdown). That's closing in! It's probably Tuesday for you. Or practically Tuesday. If you're not sure, please check the links!

When you post your story, please make sure...

  • It is at least 1,000 of your own original words and marked as complete. You can update and edit your story after the deadline, but any version you upload must be a complete story that could be read in that state, with a beginning, middle, and end, and no placeholder text.

  • It is not posted as a draft. If your work is still in Draft status on AO3 at the deadline, it will not count as fulfilling the assignment, as no one but you can access it. To check if your work is a draft, go to your assignments. If you see a work title and the 'Fulfill' button, your work is a draft and you have not yet fulfilled the assignment. You can also check your drafts at the 'Drafts' sidebar link from your main AO3 page. Fully-posted works can be viewed from your Stats page and from Works in Collections. You can also reach out to mods to check!

  • It features *all* requested characters or follows exceptions specified in the additional tags ("My gift must feature..."). Please see this post for a reminder of how the additional tags work. Regarding Worldbuilding: if your recipient has not selected characters beyond that tag, whether to flesh out the world using original characters or canon characters is up to you. If they have vetoed specific characters, obey those DNWs.

  • It does not contain Do Not Wants. Please check that your story does not contain any of the Do Not Wants (DNWs) listed in your recipient's Optional Details. If you have any doubt about the meaning of your recipient’s DNWs, please contact the mods.

  • Its title and other metadata are not placeholders. Please don't call your work Placeholder Title or Yuletide 2024 Work - upload a title that reflects the unique work. You don't need to write a summary or append detailed tags, but please make sure that if you do include that information, the information is real.

Other important tips
  • Stay anonymous! Yuletide is a secret exchange. Don't give away publicly what you're writing or who you're writing it for. Don't add your work to an existing series on AO3, or a personal works collection. Don't identify yourself in your author's notes by, for example, linking to your tumblr or dreamwidth.

  • Please don’t use author’s notes to apologise for your story, go into detail about the difficulties you had writing it, or promise a fix or a continuation.

Please check your story immediately after posting to ensure it is showing up okay.

The default deadline has passed! Defaults after this date will require a New Year’s Resolution fic before you can sign up again. See more info about defaulting at our FAQ.

Original assignments and pinch hits #1-110 are due in a little over 6 days, at:

9am UTC, 18 December
See when that is in YOUR timezone

The Yuletide deadline is not the end of the day on the 18th. It may be closer to the end of the day on the 17th! This is an international exchange, and deadlines are given in UTC/GMT. Please click the links and check when the deadline is for you. This prevents: a shock on the day, your assignment being sent to the pinch hit list, and potentially missing out on your own gift.

Good luck to all writing, and especial thanks to everyone tackling pinch hits! We currently have pinch hits available over at [community profile] yuletide_pinch_hits.

Today is the default deadline! Here is its countdown. If things aren't working out for you, default before the end of the countdown and you can sign up next year no problem - assuming there isn't anything else complicated about your circumstances, for example, you defaulted last time you signed up, too.

We have over 300 works in the main collection, and over 40 works in the Madness collection. Exciting! How many will we have at deadline, and how many more at reveals?

Some other tips
  • Works must be complete stories when you post them - it's okay to keep editing but they should be solid first drafts with beginnings, middles, and ends (or equivalent, for unconventional narrative formats), free of notes to yourself in the body of the text, and marked Complete. Please check your work over after you post it.

  • Yuletide has an anonymous period. Please don't link to your social media in your author's notes. Please don't add your work to a personal AO3 collection.

  • Please check your recipient's DNWs to make sure you haven't included content they don't want as your story idea has developed.

We have a beta post, where volunteers are warmly welcomed and much appreciated. Additionally, the Yuletide Discord has several outstanding beta requests. Please get in touch, either by joining the Discord and speaking to someone with a Hippo or Admin role, or emailing yuletideadmin@gmail.com, if you may be able to help with -
the fandoms under this cut (CLICK/TAP)
Baldur's Gate, Enola Holmes (Movies), Expanse (TV), Lucifer (Comic), Minecraft: Story Mode, Turner Series - Cat Sebastian, Unspecified [British Army in Iraq 2003-2005]

Thank you!!! Good luck, everyone!

And if you had to default: sorry it didn't work out! Thank you for taking part.

Default deadline

The deadline for defaulting on Yuletide with no penalty is 9am UTC on 11 December - just under one week from now. This may be 10 December (Tuesday) in your time zone.

The default deadline is the cut-off point for defaulting on your Yuletide assignment without a penalty. This applies if it's your first Yuletide, or if you didn't default the last time you signed up or took a pinch hit. Default before this time, and you're free to sign up again, no further penalty. If you're not sure whether the default deadline applies to you or not, please talk to the mods (yuletideadmin@gmail.com).

People have to default every year for a variety of reasons. We don't need to know why, and we wish you well. This is a challenge people take part in for fun - it's okay if it doesn't work out. If you decide to default, we appreciate it if you press the default button on AO3 yourself. You can find it where your assignment is.

See full information about defaulting at the FAQ.

Assignment deadline

All original assignments, and all pinch hits sent out prior to the default deadline, are due at 9am UTC 18 December (which may be Tuesday 17 December for you). Countdown

Betas & Beta Help Needed

We could really, really use beta reader volunteers at the beta post and on Discord. See the FAQ for more information about finding betas if you need one!

Note: on the Yuletide Discord, requests for betas, or for brainstorming help that might give away what you're writing, are handled by DM-ing someone who currently holds a Hippo role. Please read the server FAQ before seeking a beta. Give your Hippo the relevant details and make sure you can receive messages back.

Treats and Posting

Click here for instructions on posting your assignment or treats. If you've finished your assignment and are considering treats, check out the app, and don't forget the promo post where people have advertised their canons. You may find something amazing there! Check out the prompts from pinch hitters too.

Please remember that Yuletide is an anonymous exchange until authors are revealed on January 1. Do not include your AO3 name or any links to your social media in your author's notes! You can edit these in after author reveals.

Keep Yuletide Madness in mind. The Madness collection is for stories under 1,000 words and stories which do not exactly fit the fandoms and characters requested. These works must still be gifts for other participants.

AFK post

We will also put up an Away from Keyboard post shortly. The purpose of this post is that if people know they won't be able to respond to their gift until late in the anon period, or even until the new year, they can let their author know ahead of time. (Not being able to read and respond until several days after the collection opens is expected, though - many people will have family obligations!)

Happy December!

Every year, well over a hundred pinch hitters take on extra assignments. Many of these pinch hitters are signed up to Yuletide, with an assigned writer and recipient from the start. Some are not!

Though these supporting pinch hitters are not guaranteed a gift, we'd like to make it a possibility. On this post, we're collecting prompts from the pinch hitters who are not signed up to Yuletide, so that others may give them treats.

To writers
Please consider writing a treat for a pinch hitter! See instructions for how, where, and when to post a treat. Full-length gifts for pinch hitters are welcome in the Main collection.

To pinch hitters
If you are signed up to Yuletide this year, this post does not apply to you, but we still hope you enjoy your gift(s).

If you are not signed up to Yuletide this year but you have claimed or posted a pinch hit, please comment to this post with your requests! Please limit yourself to Yuletide-eligible fandoms, but you can ask for more than 6 different fandoms.

Yuletide 2024 tag set on AO3
Tag set as a browser app

You can treat your comment as a Dear Writer letter, with likes and prompts, or include a link to a letter. Either way, please include the following information when you comment:

-your AO3 name
-your requested fandoms [please format the fandoms exactly as they are in the tag set - this helps when we collate the information!]
-your requested characters

and, optionally, ideas for what you would like to receive, DNWs, and/or (a) link(s) to other places where you have written about what you would like. You're welcome to comment on mini-challenge posts!

App: watch this space
We will periodically collect the prompts from the comments and add them to the app. At this point in the writing period, the majority of pinch hits are yet to come.

Assignments are out! You can find your assignment:
You must write for one of your recipient's requests, including all of the characters they specified in that request (but see below). It doesn't have to be the fandom you offered.

Some recipients have selected several characters, but given permission for writers not to include them all using the Additional Tags checkboxes (the ones that start "My gift must…"). These tags are new and we're still experimenting with their use, so please check through mods if you're not completely sure what your recipient means. You always have the option of including all the characters your recipient selected.

Your assignment is due at 9am UTC on December 18. Note that that's the opposite side of the day to when sign-ups closed. It may be December 17 in your time zone.

Please click on that link right now! The time it shows may surprise you. Better to be surprised now than at the deadline!

No Peeking (Or Squeaking) Until December 25th!
This is a secret exchange. Please don’t announce or hint what your assignment is. Don't say what you offered. Don’t reveal to your recipient who you are or what you plan to write for them. In fact, please don’t contact your recipient at all! You can send questions through the mods at yuletideadmin@gmail.com.

I have questions!!
Right! Send us an email at yuletideadmin@gmail.com, or, if your question won't give away what you offered or who you're writing for, you're welcome to comment here. We get tonnes of questions at this time, so please bear with us - it may take us a few days to reply.

Please don't ask us to poke your recipient to update a locked or placeholder letter until at least October 25.

When you send us a question about your assignment, please include your assignment link, which looks like: https://archiveofourown.org/collections/yuletide2024/assignments/#######

Some of your questions may be answered by our next post when we reveal all requests. Please keep an eye on our admin community!

Pinch hits and all requests
The first batch of pinch hits will go out in the next few hours. In the next following days, after those pinch hits are claimed, we will make all requests visible and open the Yuletide Madness collection.

Check out the new pinch hit community, [community profile] yuletide_pinch_hits, and sign up through Discord, a feed, or the Google groups mailing list to get immediate alerts for pinch hits. You don't have to be signed up to this year's round of Yuletide to claim a pinch hit.

The New Year's Resolutions 2024 collection is now closed.

Sign-ups for this year's event are now closed, with 1341 sign-ups. Welcome to everyone who's joined us for Yuletide 2024!

What will mods do now?
- Run matching.
- Contact participants who have no possible recipients, or where there's another matter to discuss.
- Update you on when assignments are likely to go out.

If we need to contact you, we'll use the email account associated with your AO3 account. (You can find it at Preferences -> Edit Profile -> Change Email.) We may also use this account later in Yuletide - for example, if your author has a question for you. Please check you can access this email!

What should you do now?
  • Check and edit any letter you may have linked in your sign-up (please ensure it's complete by end of October 25 AT THE VERY LATEST, and consider adding it to the app and to the comments at the letters post). (If you didn't link your letter in your sign-up, it's too late now. Trust in your author!)

  • Please check your letter is accessible - log out of the platform where you have posted it and check that you can still view it, or ask a friend to. Tumblr in particular may cause issues with this and may require you to change your settings.

  • Keep quiet about what you've offered: Yuletide is anonymous until reveals.

  • Check that you can access your AO3-linked email.

  • Check out the new pinch hit community, [community profile] yuletide_pinch_hits, and sign up through Discord, a feed, or the Google groups mailing list to get immediate alerts for pinch hits. You don't have to be signed up to this year's round of Yuletide to claim a pinch hit.

  • Browse the promo post or even add a promotion.

  • Look forward to your assignments!

Congratulations to everyone who posted a story to the 2024 New Year's Resolutions collection, either as requested by mods or just because you wanted to fill a prompt. The collection will be open for roughly one more day, until we send out assignments - if you're planning to post, post soon! The NYR 2025 collection will open on January 1.

Yuletide sign-ups close in 24 hours! Please get your sign up in for this year's round!

Some participants have run into a known AO3 bug that occasionally creates duplicate signups under the same name when they submit their sign-up. If this happens to you, you’ll see an error after submitting your signup and won’t be able to edit. If you do run into this, let us know–we’ve been keeping an eye on it and removing duplicates when we see them.

Letters are optional, but you cannot add a letter to your sign-up after sign-ups close. Please either include a link to your letter in your sign-up form, or don't write one.

If you have any questions or run into any problems, email the mods - we are happy to help!

Yuletide sign-ups close in 4 days! Please get your sign up in for this year's round!

Some sign-up notes:
  • Additional tags have no effect on matching. Whatever additional tag you select, you can only match up with an author who offered all the characters you selected, or offered Any characters.

  • Please do not encourage a creator to contact you, anonymously or otherwise. Questions about requests need to go through the mods.

  • If you're planning to write a letter, the link needs to be in your sign-up before sign-ups close, and we expect you to finish up the text very soon after. Please make sure your letter is publicly viewable when it is complete.

  • If you choose "My gift must feature all of my chosen character tags; or it may use exceptions I explain in the form" as a tag in a request, please describe the exception within the AO3 form.

If you're looking for inspiration for requests and offers, there are a lot of mini-challenges and fandom round-ups by type at [community profile] yuletide, as well as fandom promos and participant letters.

This year, we’re changing the way we advertise pinch hits.

What are pinch hits?

Pinch hits are a system for ensuring everyone gets a gift. When an assignment isn’t matched to an author, or when an author has to default on an assignment, mods send that assignment out to pinch hit for anyone to claim. See more at our FAQ.

Previously, mods would advertise pinch hits via a Google group, and pinch hitters would claim them by responding to those advertisements over email. However, in 2022 and 2023, we had difficulties sending out pinch hits because Google groups throttled our messages when we sent too many too quickly - and wouldn’t tell us the actual thresholds for “too many” and “too quickly”. Because of this, we are trying something new this year.

How will pinch hits be advertised in 2024?

This year, full details of the pinch hits will be posted to the [community profile] yuletide_pinch_hits Dreamwidth community. This is a public community, so you can see new pinch hits posted there even if you are not signed in.

Whether or not you have a Dreamwidth account, there are a few ways you can watch for pinch hits. Mods will continue to post alerts at the Yuletide and Fandom Exchanges Discord and to the pinch hit Google group. If you set .role yulephs in the #testing-and-bot channel of the Discord, you will get a ping when a pinch hit alert is posted. These alerts won’t include the full text of each pinch hit request but will link back to the associated Dreamwidth post.

If you want to see pinch hit posts in your feed reader, the RSS and Atom feeds for this community are:

How can I claim a pinch hit in 2024?

Comments are disabled at the [community profile] yuletide_pinch_hits Dreamwidth community. To claim a pinch hit, please email the mods at yuletideadmin@gmail.com and:
  • Include the pinch hit number in the subject line
  • Include the recipient’s AO3 name in the subject line
  • Include your AO3 username in the body of the email
For example, if your AO3 username is yuletidehippo and you want to claim Pinch Hit #42 for AwsomRecip, you might email us with the subject line “PH 42 for AwsomRecip” and “I’m yuletidehippo on AO3” in the body of the email. As was the case previously, if you don’t receive a reply you did not get the pinch hit.

You do not need to be signed up for Yuletide or have a Dreamwidth account to claim a pinch hit. You do need an AO3 account.

Last year, we experimented with posting pinch hits to Dreamwidth and allowing pinch hitters to claim them either by email or by commenting on the Dreamwidth post. Dreamwidth is a good way to post details of pinch hit requests, but managing claims in both locations was inefficient for us. After discussion, we determined it will be easiest for us to manage claims over email, which is why comments are turned off at the Dreamwidth posts.

If you have any questions, please feel free to ask!

Sign-up notes

If your sign-up includes a letter link, please make sure that link works for all viewers! In particular, if your letter is on tumblr, please set it up to be viewable for people who do NOT have tumblr. If you're using Google docs, we recommend linking a web-published version of your letter.

We also have notes on additional tags.

Please don't choose the additional tag that says "My gift must feature one or more of my chosen character tags (giver's choice)" if you're requesting a pairing, or if you're asking for 3-4 characters and you want at least 2 characters to show up. The "giver's choice" tag means you are giving your author explicit permission to write a story about ONE character you selected. If that isn't what you mean, please choose a different tag. Shippy content isn't guaranteed in Yuletide, but if you want both halves of your ship to show up in the same fic, please select both characters and also select "My gift must feature all of my chosen character tags (if 0: any from tag set)".

If you’re asking for 3-4 characters and you want at least 2 characters to show up, please choose "My gift must feature all of my chosen character tags; or it may use exceptions I explain in the form" - and then explain your exceptions. For example: “Any 2 of these characters” or “only A and B, or C and D”.

Please don't choose the additional tag that says "My gift must feature one or more of my chosen character tags (giver's choice)" if you have selected one character. That tag is designed to work with multiple characters. If you chose that tag and you're not sure why we're advising against it, please reach out (comments here or yuletideadmin@gmail.com).

Please don't choose the additional tag that says "My gift must feature all of my chosen character tags; or it may use exceptions I explain in the form" unless you immediately write your exceptions into the form. Please make sure those exceptions are in the signup form itself, not just in your letter.

Please do check with us if you aren't sure which additional tag to use, or just want to confirm you understand things the same way that mods do. Thank you, we're happy to hear from you!

Please read this post even if you have signed up before!

Then check out the tag set to see what fandoms are available this year, and make a shortlist of what you plan to offer and request. (The same fandoms can be on both lists, if you want.)

Then sign up at the collection. We recommend you allow at least half an hour to sign up. While you can edit your sign-up over the next week, you will not be able to make any changes after sign-ups close at 9pm UTC on Friday 18 October.

Requests

  • You can request 3-6 fandoms

  • Each fandom must be different

  • You can request 0*-4 characters in each fandom

  • *Requesting 0 characters means "I am happy to receive any nominated character for this fandom. My author gets to choose which one(s)". That includes Worldbuilding for fandoms where Worldbuilding is nominated as a character tag. If no characters are nominated for the fandom, requesting 0 characters means “I am happy to receive any character or worldbuilding for this fandom.”

  • "AND" matching means your writer must include every character you select. If you are happy with a subset of your selected characters, indicate this with Additional Tags, and clarify any exceptions in your optional details.

  • You can only request characters from the tag set, though your optional prompts may mention other characters to appear too.

  • In some fandoms, you can request Worldbuilding as a character. You can find guidance on that here.

AND matching and additional tags
Generally, when you select characters in your sign-up form, it means you want and expect your gift to include all of those characters. This is a key principle for matching and assignments. However, some people like to give their author further options. We are using the Additional Tags section of the form for this.

If you requested 0 characters, or you want all the characters you selected to appear, you will tick the first Additional Tag option, which says "My gift must feature all of my chosen character tags (if 0: any from tag set)". If you think your situation might be different, please read this recent post about additional tags and select additional tags that are right for your requests. This information is also in the sign-up form.

Optional Details and Do Not Wants (DNWs)
"Optional details" = prompts, ideas, likes, explanations of how you see the canon. Optional details and DNWs can be recorded in the main text section of your requests.

Optional details are optional (ODAO)! Your writer doesn't have to follow your prompts, though they must avoid your DNWs. You don't have to give prompts here, either - though prompts and ideas may be a more inspiring first impression than a list of DNWs on its own. Prompts may be particularly useful if you are requesting a Worldbuilding tag.

See this 2020 post for some considerations when writing your DNWs. We've also recently clarified our rules and guidance about DNWs.

The Optional Details section of your AO3 requests is especially relevant if you have selected option two of the additional tags, "My gift must feature all of my chosen character tags; or it may use exceptions I explain in the form". In that case, please use this section of the form for explaining how and when your writer is allowed to leave out some of the characters you selected.

Please use minimal html in the optional details field. No images, please.

Please also note in the form if you're able to receive treats - or if you don't want them! Yuletide has a long-established culture of extra gifts, but if you created your account recently, you may have extra gifts turned off by default. Please check your AO3 preferences, and then state in your sign-up form whether you do or do not accept treats.

Letters
You can write prompts and preferences in another space, such as Dreamwidth, Livejournal, Google Docs, or Tumblr, and put a link in your sign-up. This is known as a "letter". Some people write letters; some don't. DNWs and character subsets that are listed in a letter but not in the Optional Details AO3 textbox cause confusion and difficulty for creators, and will not be enforced by the mods. Otherwise, your letter is an extension of your optional details and is treated the same way.

Important: You cannot add a letter after sign-ups close.

Offers

  • You can offer 4-10 fandoms

  • Each fandom must be different

  • You can offer 2-20 specific characters in each

  • If you want to offer a fandom that has 0-1 characters available, tick the "Any" box

  • If you are willing to write any combination of nominated characters, including Worldbuilding for fandoms where it is nominated, tick the "Any" box

  • "Worldbuilding" can also be selected as a character for many fandoms. Please check here to see how we're using it.

  • Offers are secret! Please don't declare openly what you're offering.

If you have several fandoms in which you want to offer to write Any nominated characters, you can make your last offer a "Bucket Offer". You can read about bucket offers in the Sign-ups section of the AO3 FAQ.

Signing up!

The sign-up form is here.

Please check the tag set or the app when signing up. The autocomplete drop-down list in the sign-up form may not show all available characters. If they're in the tag set, you can enter them manually.

Sign-Up Summary

The list of requested/offered fandoms will be available after five people have signed up. Bucket offers do not show up in the list. Checking the sign-up summary for people you may be able to write for is a good idea - although many people sign up at the last minute. The sign-up summary says it updates hourly; in practice it may update less frequently.

Fandoms at 1-1 on the sign-up summary may mean that the same person is offering and requesting the fandom, not that there is a match.

Welcome to Yuletide!

Feel free to ask us questions.

We’re working on tagset cleanup and hope to finish that over the weekend! If you haven’t yet, please review the tagset on AO3 or on the app and report any errors here. Please also note that joining in with Yuleswaps (physical gift swaps) end on the 5th - see [community profile] yuletide.

The next step of Yuletide is sign-ups! Which brings us to the main topic of this post. Every so often, it’s worth having a discussion about longstanding parts of our exchange.

One of these is Do-Not-Wants, a list of tropes or topics specified in a signup form that mean a recipient doesn’t want to receive those things. These are commonly abbreviated as DNWs.

We’ve updated our language around DNWs in our FAQ and Rules, as follows:

In the FAQ under "Sign-ups" then "What are optional details?":
We require writers to make note of the squicks, triggers, and other DNWs their recipient has put in the "Optional Details" fields and make a good-faith effort to avoid those. This includes brief mentions of DNWs as well as DNWs for things that appear in canon. If a writer isn’t sure how a DNW applies to a particular request, it is the writer’s responsibility to check with the mods. Mods can contact recipients privately to clarify a DNW’s meaning or potential exceptions.
Compare 2023 text

In the FAQ under "Assignments" then "Can I write a story in any of my recipient's fandoms, even if I didn't offer them?":
Sure! As long as you write a story for one of the fandoms they requested, including all of the characters they requested in that fandom while avoiding their DNWs, you're good.
Compare 2023 text

In the Participation Rules under "Assignments":
You are not allowed to… Ignore your recipient’s Do-Not-Wants, including DNWs that occur in canon or mentions of DNWs
Compare 2023 text

This language reflects the fact that DNWs can be complicated. Often, they include topics that occur in canon and may be relevant to a prompt. Sometimes a recipient is fine with brief mentions of a DNW, or with a DNW that’s handled in a specific way, while in other cases they may not want a DNW to be referred to or implied at all. In still other cases, a recipient may list a DNW for one of their fandoms that they prompt for in another fandom.

In cases where there is some nuance, it can be helpful for a recipient to provide some guidance in their signup. However, it’s ultimately the writer’s responsibility to contact the mods if they believe there may be unstated exceptions to the recipient’s DNWs.

We’d like to link back to a post on DNWs from the 2020 round, where we and the commenters discuss some of this nuance, ways to approach DNWs in your requests and as a writer, and situations that have come up in the past.

Feel free to continue the conversation or ask questions here!
